Turkey Pot, Turkey Pot, Turkey Pot Pie!

I always said that I never wanted to be one of those women who freak about their weight. It’s never been a problem for me. I’ve been lucky to have good genes and a fairly active lifestyle. This last year hasn’t been so great with my active lifestyle since I used to work 60hrs a week mostly on my feet and now I work 40hrs a week sitting on my butt. Though, I’ve recently starting doing Pilates 3 times a week to help with the mommy curves. Pilates is kicking my ass. Seriously, the buns and thigh workout makes me feel like I have a hot iron strapped to my ass.

I never really focused on my weight until two things happened:1) Not being able to shed those last few pregnancy pounds and 2) my new migraine meds.

The New Canadian Food Guide has been released and I decided to check it out. The new vegetable and grain recommendations seem crazy to me. How can one person eat that many fruits and vegetables (8 servings) and grains (7 servings) in one day??!! Ok, the fruit and veg. thing I can actually see happening but so many grains!!!

The point is, on the chart they recommend for a woman my age and activity level (low activity) caloric intake should be 2100 per day. I counted all my calories yesterday and could only come up with 740 approx. Sad, very sad. I scrounged all the boxes and packaging I could find to add this number up. More than anything I was just curious. Jon kept telling me that I would drive myself crazy counting calories.

Today at lunch, I had one of those pre-pack turkey pot pies. After popping it in the microwave, I read the nutritional info and saw a calorie count of 550 and seriously thought about NOT eating it. It happened just that fast. I became one of those women. And Jon was right.

I am going to go off this migraine medication because I have myself convinced that it’s making me fat. I don’t want to spend my life worrying about weight. It’s stupid and I’m not fat. I’m not even close.

You Can Call Me Bessy

So, y’all know about my migraines. Well, I’m on this new medication that seems to be working. But there is a down side. The meds increase my appetite and as a direct result, I’m gaining weight. And there’s no way to tell if it’s just going to be that way for the adjustment period or if it will continue to make me hungry. To make matters worse, it makes me lethargic and basically all I feel like doing is lounging around on my newly-expanding ass. Super. So, I’ll be a migraine-free heifer. Moo.

Remember a few weeks back, SJ, when you told me at family supper that you hadn't seen me eat so much in a long time. (I had seconds and a few helpings of dessert). Just last week, I had 3 maybe 4 pieces of chocolate cake for dessert. Well, now you know why.

I don't feel like I'm eating any more often than usually, just way, waaaayyy more food at one sitting. I'm finding it takes a lot more to get to the point where I think I'm full. I can pack it away like no other, I tell you!

To those who I’ve told about the common side effect of this drug of “massive weight gain” (yeah, it actually said “massive weight gain”) and said it couldn’t be that bad, get this: I’ve gained 8lbs in 6 weeks since starting this drug. Ouch. Now, I know that this doesn’t sound like much but at this point, without sucking in, I look like I’m 5 months along. I’m a small chick, so 8lbs really does make a big difference.

That weird sound you’re hearing is me crying, curled up into a ball in the corner, rocking back and forth, mumbling “sweet merciful crap, this can’t be happening, this can’t be happening…”

What to do, what to do… All the crazy lose weight quickly schemes have flown through my head: only drink water when I’m hungry or go on a liquid diet (this seemed to work for the gastric bypass patients on TV last night, though their weight lose may have had something to do with the fact that their stomach was now a 1oz pouch) . I had to count all these options out because 1. I’m not crazy and 2. I love food WAY too much. God damn, I love those carbs. My favorite right now is PB and honey sandwiches. Don’t laugh, it’s fucking delicious.

My doc suggested the G.I. Diet (Glycemic Index). It’s not a “diet” per say, more like a more efficient way of eating for my body (my lazy, lazy body). Basically, since I don’t feel like doing anything, my body is burning few calories but I continue to eat foods that require a lot of energy to burn off. I’ve been eating high glycemic foods that are quick to break down leaving me hungry faster. The new diet has me eating foods that are low glycemic foods that take longer to break down, leaving me fuller longer. So, I may have an increased appetite but I’m feeding it foods that will shut it up for longer. AND I’m not starving myself! I haven’t gotten the book yet but it goes by a system of classifying foods by red, yellow and green. Red – bad, Yellow – only eat sometimes and Green – go for it!

We’ll see how it turns out. God help me if I keep gaining weight. I can’t afford new pants! It’s not funny because it's true.

Hot Crazy Mama

I visited a friend's house over the weekend and spied a scale under her bench in the kitchen. I haven't weighed myself for at least 6 months, so I decided that I shoud probably just do it and get it over with.

I step on and look down. I stare at the numbers, blink a few times and look again.

"Um, is this scale accurate?"

"Let me see." I move off and she steps on. "Yep, it's right on."

And it's official, I have kicked pregnancy weight ass! I'm down to 1 pound less than my pre-pregnancy weight. At good old 117lbs. Could I be more excited?? I don't think so!!

The best part about the whole thing is that I didn't try, not for one second, to lose this weight. It literally just came off. Sure, it took a year but required no effort at all. And I am all about no effort work-outs.

So, take it from me ladies. It can be done without going to the gym. All you need is a really big anxiety problem that lets you sit down for no more than a half hour at a time before the need to clean/tidy something becomes too much for you to ignore any longer.

"Uh yeah, hi there. It's me, the cup on the half wall. Listen, I really need to be taken off this shelf and put in the dishwasher. Right and while you're there, run the dishwasher, do Lauren's dishes, sweep the floor, change the garbage and clean up Jon's desk because you know he won't do it himself. Oh hey, I hear the dirty towels calling from your room. Something about wanting to be cleaned and folded neatly by size and color and put into the closet."
